简介

A quaint little book, Short Walks on Long Island, contains this passage: "To suggest climbing a hill on Long Island may appear frivolous, but since we have an urge to reach heights and see the view from there, it occurs to us that others may, too." With that, authors Rodney and Priscilla Albright direct readers to Bald Hill, south of the Village of Riverhead in eastern Long Island. After returning from the high points of Long Island —Nassau and Suffolk counties—I was asked: "Long Island has a hill?" While it is true that no county outside the boroughs of New York City has smaller hills, there are heights to be reached on Walt Whitman's beloved "fish-shaped" island. The Nassau County highpoint is on private property. An alternate summit hike is provided in the eTrail.
