well, it's a holiday resort with a beach break, so it gets really crowded on weekends and holidays, mostly with locals from san jose and u.s. americans. it has a lot of shops and board repairs, but most shops are actually gift shops who rent boards.
for the real deal check chuck's surf shop (north of the bridge) or the one just at the bridge (south of it) for infos about the local conditions and latest gossip. they know their area quite well and will give good advice where to go (even for other areas in costa rica).
oh, and don't wander around the beach at night...
