简介

The Uncle Jim Trail provides a short introduction to the forests and rim area of the North Rim. A somewhat dubious honor, the route was named for “Uncle Jim” Owens, a game warden who worked in the region in the early part of this century. Following accepted game management practice at the time, Owens reportedly killed more than 500 mountain lions in order to strengthen the deer population. The slaughter had just the opposite effect, however: the deer multiplied and reached numbers too great for the area to support. The resulting starvation of thousands of deer highlighted the importance of predators in maintaining nature’s balance.
