A three- to five-day hike on historic trails in Grand Canyon National Park. There is always water in Hermit Creek, and there’s designated camping at the Park Service campsite. The trail down Hermit Canyon is about 1.5 miles, and descends through ancient rock formations to the Colorado River. The Tapeats sandstone, a rock that was derived from beach sand, forms the rim of lower Hermit Creek. The somber dark gray rocks of the gorge are Vishnu schist, among the oldest rocks on earth. The hard, twisted schist is the result of extreme pressures deep in the earth, probably caused by movement of the continental plates. The side canyon ends at Hermit Rapid, one of the largest in the Grand Canyon. For modern river craft, Hermit Rapid is fun but not difficult, because the water is deep and free of rocks. At high water the waves reach heights of 20 feet or more.
