Denmark was one of many small Nova Scotia communities that relied on woodcraft and lumber for its economic survival. Using pine and maple from the distant Cobequid Hills, the Sutherland Mill used steam power to manufacture sleighs, doors, carriages, sleds, windows, and gingerbread trim from 1894 to 1958. The steam boiler provided enough power to keep production levels up to 20% higher than competing water-powered mills. The mill is now a museum, restored by the Province to its 1894 condition. If you arrive on a “steam-up” day, you will see the saws and the boiler in operation. This section of the abandoned rail line is a full day’s hike, anchored on either end by the town of Tatamagouche and the Sutherland Steam Mill Museum. It is easy tramping, but may be longer than most people’s comfort.
