简介

Chemehuevi Mountains Wilderness rises from the Colorado River to the summit of 3,697-foot Chemehuevi Peak. Although this may not seem like much elevation, the overall relief is quite substantial. The mountains, which include granitic rock and volcanic spires, form a horseshoe with the center facing eastward toward the Colorado River. The central valley is covered by dense stands of cholla, ocotillo, and agave. Chemehuevi Mountains Wilderness is immediately adjacent to the Havasu Wilderness Area managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Taken together, this is a biologically rich area. The Chemehuevi Mountains contain a mixture of Sonoran and Mojave Desert species. The close proximity to the Colorado River provides a habitat for riparian and water-dependent species as well, resulting in an unusually rich diversity of species for the California desert. Bighorn sheep and mule deer are reported for the area. Other unusual creatures include the Great Plains toad, Great Basin spadefoot toad, tree lizard, westernground snake, Sonoran lyre snake, and mountain lion.
