简介

In northern Lancaster County, this 6,254-acre wildlife management area (WMA) offers picnicking, fishing, hunting, wildlife-watching, and nature study. Nine miles of trail traverse the site’s varied habitats, which include hardwood forest, conifer plantation, cultivated and noncultivated fields, wetland, scrub, and creek and lake impoundment shores. Explore ridgetop and valley floor. Extended by the Coleman Estate/Furnace Hills tract, the WMA contributes to a vast contiguous open space preserving unbroken forest and a vital wildlife corridor between Lancaster and Lebanon Counties. The selected four short hikes present much of the WMA’s varied terrain and wildlife. Altogether eight hikes are possible, including a tour of the Horseshoe Trail, part of a 134-mile hiking trail link between Valley Forge and the Appalachian Trail. Special attractions: 400-acre Middle Creek Impoundment; vistas; birdwatching, with resident Canada geese, eagles seen nearly daily in summer and fall, and migrant snow geese and tundra swans in winter and early spring; laurel and wildflowers.
