简介

If you want to break a sweat, this is the hike for you. If you are weak in the knees, move on. The Ute Trail is a hardy hiker’s hike—straight up through dense forest to a rock outcrop that offers a stunning eagle’s-eye view of the countryside. Below lies Aspen, laid out like a checkerboard on the floor of the valley. Eastward rise the steep mountains surrounding Independence Pass. Mount Sopris, portal of the Roaring Fork Valley, towers to the west, a solitary symmetrical peak of astounding simplicity and beauty. The path to the overlook is a difficult one, strewn with switchbacks (19 total—count ’em) and broken into alternating forested sections and sections denuded by avalanches. The trail borders Aspen Ski Mountain, which is notorious for its steeps; after this hike, you will know why.
