简介

Tired of manicured trails and ready to rough it? Once a Potawatomi marshland, the shallow waters of Skokie Lagoons were harnessed during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Decades later during the Cold War, a Nike anti-aircraft missile base was stationed here. Popular with canoers, kayakers, and anglers nowadays, these seven picturesque lagoons are pocked with densely forested islands. This hike penetrates one of the island’s leafy walls on a choked, rugged path that might test your resolve. But the short journey is worth the struggle for the solitude and the views of the tranquil waters through the underbrush.
