Diamonds are forever—that is, unless they’re Cape May diamonds. These ersatz gems, found along several Delaware Bay beaches, are actually quartz pebbles that have been broken up and deposited on the sands by thousands of years of waves. In earlier times there were so many of these “diamonds” on Higbee Beach that it was called “Diamond Beach.” Other gems encountered on this hike include dense woods, meadows, and towering white sand dunes. While many serious birdwatchers flock to the tip of nearby Cape May, which is world famous for the fall bird migration, you’ll be able to spot many of the same birds without the crowds. More than 250 species, including the bald eagle, are present at Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area. The hike is short, but trudging through the sand can sometimes be tiring. Allow extra time to linger and examine driftwood and pretty shells along the beach. While you can refresh yourself by dipping your feet into Delaware Bay during warm weather, don’t swim; there are no lifeguards, and there’s a strong undertow.
