Named for the famous poet who resided in this area in the late 1800s, the Walt Whitman Trail in West Hills County Park offers an invigorating hike for both dogs and their owners in western Suffolk County. One of the higher points in the area, Jaynes Hill, at 401 feet above sea level, provides a moderate climb along this otherwise tranquil hike. Also note that horses frequent the side roads throughout this park. Take care to watch for horses and their riders as you travel along the trails.
