简介

Anthracite coal was discovered in Summit Hill in 1791, and the Lehigh Valley Coal and Navigation Company was established to bring it to market. A primitive rail system, invented in 1827, brought the coal from the mines by gravity to the Lehigh River in Mauch Chunk — now Jim Thorpe — Pennsylvania. Coal was loaded onto wooden cars and run downhill, their speed controlled by hand brakes. Mules hauled the empty cars up the mountain on the same rails. The mules traveled back to Mauch Chunk in special stable cars attached to the coal cars and were fed en route — the first railroad dining cars. Interesting features: Historic gravity railroad grade, scenic views. Surface: Abandoned railroad grade, rocky woods road.
