The Cobequid Trail is an initiative by the community to reclaim a portion of the former rail line that once connected Truro to Windsor, through the Kennetcook River Valley, and turn it into a recreational path. The municipality has acquired the land and has recently developed it into a multi-use path. Most of the length, from the Shubenacadie River to near Windsor, was sold to a private interest. Much of the remainder, from the Shubenacadie River to just outside Truro, was given to adjacent farmers. The town acquired the portion of rail line inside its limits. The trail is typical abandoned rail bed: level, wide, and with no major climbs anywhere. The route is never more than a few hundred metres/ yards from houses, except when it is out on the dikelands. Even there, housing is still within clear sight. Amenities such as stores can be found at various points along the trail. The western section of the trail connects to the dikelands along the Salmon River near the Palliser Restaurant. This is a great place to watch the tidal bore where more than 10 km (6.25 mi) of dikes run in both directions. The maintenance roads run at their base, and the grassed slopes are easy walking on a fine, fall day. This is a great location for bird watching at this time of year: ducks, geese, and hawks are among the many species you should be able to find while on your walk. Ringed-neck pheasants are another common sight, especially in the grassy fields of the dikelands.
