Beach dunes, huge holly trees, saltwater marshes, coastal-defense ruins, a 19th-century fort, and even a historic lighthouse combine to endow this long, level jaunt with an interdisciplinary appeal. The icing on the cake comes in two flavors: a striking view of Manhattan from an observation deck near the Hook’s end, and the many waterfowl and migratory birds that pass by at various times of year.
