The hulking remnants of obsolete military batteries challenge spectacular views, a popular beach, and the Golden Gate Bridge for dominance along this stretch of the Coastal Trail. Generations of coastal defenses line the Coastal Trail between Baker Beach and the Golden Gate. From forts that date back to the Civil War to Nike missile sites, San Francisco’s seacoast has seen one style of defense give way to the next over hundreds of years as the art of war evolved. The batteries along this portion of the Coastal Trail generally predate the great wars of the twentieth century. The brick- and earthworks of Batteries East and West were erected just after the Civil War.
