简介

Viewed in the soft light of a winter rain, and from its most verdant vantage point, this river inspires the plein-air painter—a low, slow, but steady flow past sculpted sand bars and several tiny isles, by willow-lined banks and driftwood-strewn beaches. Musical accompaniment is offered by croaking bullfrogs, the rusty-hinge sounding call of the red-winged black bird, and by the river itself, bubbling over its cobble bed. When the rain stops and the misty curtain parts, L.A.’s namesake river is a different picture indeed. In harsher light, and from most vista points along its 51mile length, the river looks just like what it is—a concrete channelized viaduct built with the same aesthetics, environmental consciousness and sensitivity to neighborhood integrity as the freeways that cross and parallel it.
