简介

If you have only a couple of hours to spare and want an easy to moderate hike in pleasant surroundings, head to Huber Woods Park. Situated on a hill in the Locust section of Middletown overlooking the Navesink River, the trails aren’t too taxing while offering a great opportunity to teach children tree identification in a hardwood forest of oak, tulip, beech, and poplar. The original 118 acres donated by the Hans Huber family in 1974 have grown to 258 acres that have been permanently preserved as open space for nature education. In addition to the picturesque farm complex, the German-Swiss-style manor house, built in 1927, is currently used for environmental education, nature programs, and cross-country ski clinics as well as hands-on displays of plants and animals and details about the history of the park. Interior rooms feature a weather station, bird-viewing area, and restrooms. The Reptile House, with a variety of reptiles native to Monmouth County, is adjacent to the center. The park’s 6 miles of multiuse trails—designed for walking, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding—include a short, easy Nature Loop highlighting the diversity of the woods. Spring is an outstanding time to visit when the mountain laurel and pink azalea are in bloom. The Discovery Path, south of the environmental center, is a great place for younger children. Pick up a brochure (available between the parking lot and the environmental center) and stop at numbered posts to learn the history of the park, bird identification according to song, how forests grow on dry, sandy soils, and many more educational facts.
