简介

Seven Tubs appears on topo maps as either the Whirlpool or Whirlpool Canyon. Nothing so dramatic as that is found here, however. Rather, what’s found is a series of small cataracts of profound subtle beauty, so much so that I ended up spending four rainy hours when I had planned to spend just one. The Tubs is open from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. on weekends from Labor Day to Memorial Day and daily during the summer. Seven Tubs is appropriately named, as Wheelbarrow Run runs swiftly through a small chasm and makes seven chutelike drops into seven swirling, tublike pools. None of the drops is more than 6 feet, and the tubs don’t carry much water. Nevertheless, the unique nature of Seven Tubs and its ease of access and photographing make it worth the effort. On summer weekends, it can be crowded with swimmers, so shooting is best done during cool, wet spring weekends when no one would be willing to swim. It’s possible, but difficult, to photograph the shoulder-wide gorge from the ledges along the rim. To shoot from within the tubs, bring hiking sandals or water socks, swim trunks, and an insurance policy for your equipment. If you have an underwater housing for your equipment, use it.
