A hike through the floodplain woodlands along White Clay Creek. White Clay Creek Preserve Loop is the only trail in the several sections of the park that actually runs along White Clay Creek, following its banks to the Pennsylvania line, where the preserve extends across the border. The area is popular with birders, botanists, and other naturalists who like “going afield.” A public journal at the nature center notes sightings of the many local birds, including red-bellied, downy, and pileated woodpeckers, osprey, kingfishers, wild turkeys, cedar waxwings, and blackburnian warblers. There are also wild geraniums, wood violets, trillium, and trout lily in abundance, as well as mammals large and small. Reports say there is even a mountain lion roaming this neck of the woods! Special considerations: Pets are permitted in some areas of the park, but they must be leashed. Check the signs at the trailhead or inquire at the contact station. Some trails are closed during the hunting season.
